About

Our Story

Sohan Kahlon and son, Gordie Kahlon, started farming in 1983 with a 14-acre raspberry patch located in Abbotsford, BC. Sohan had immigrated to Canada from Punjab in 1971, followed by the rest of the family in 1977. The young family was eager to work. After living in Quesnel, BC for several years, the Kahlons moved to Abbotsford in 1983 to live and work on the farm.

The fledgling operation faced many challenges. The farm was highly leveraged at 14% interest rates. There wasn’t enough irrigation water to run overhead sprinklers, but the farm adapted by installing a drip system. The market price for berries in 1983 was depressed, making it difficult to service the debt. With low returns for berries hand harvest was no longer an option. Kahlon Farms was among the first to purchase a mechanical berry harvester in 1988.

As is often the case, adversity brings innovation and innovation can bring opportunities. Over the years, Kahlon Farms has grown and flourished. Abbotsford has been a great place to live, work, grow a business, and raise a family. Kahlon Farms has always been involved in and supported the grower community and agricultural organizations. Over the years, we have formed many valuable relationships with our customers, employees, and suppliers. With the third generation actively involved in the family farm, Kahlon Farms is excited to continue supplying safe, high-quality berries for our customers.
